*Piet Hein (December 16, 1905 – April 17, 1996) was a Danish polymath. He was a scientist, mathematician, inventor, designer, author, and poet who often wrote under the Old Norse pseudonym “kumbel” (gravestone). His short poems, known as “grooks” (Danish: “gruks”), first appeared shortly after the Nazi occupation in April 1940 in the Danish daily newspaper ‘Politiken’ under the pseudonym “Kumbel Kumbell.” Incidentally, he is said to have been a direct descendant of the historically significant Dutch pirate of the same name.
